My theme is about the way people express their emotions. More specifically, how people use different arts to do so. For example, dancing to express anger, or painting to express sadness. I tried to show these through use of color, tone, motif and also technique. My art is very optimistic for the most part, no matter the expression there is some hope. The paintings are all very cerebral, contrary to the romantic theme.
In my concentration, I have roughly 15 pieces that I thought really showed the variety in my theme. While my theme seems unclear to some, I feel that showing the art is the best way to explain it. First, I have the scratchboard of my cousin Cameron playing piano. Then I have the set of two paintings of the tree with a tire swing with different colored backgrounds. Then is the dancer with a spotlight behind her, making a sunburst look. After that is a large painting of a girl playing violin and then a block print of a blank canvas with so much potential. Then I have the colored pencil drawing of Madonna singing in the movie “Evita”. This image is a copy, but I wanted to show Madonna specifically and I wanted to practice colored pencil by imitating a photo. So I killed two birds with one stone. Then I have another colored pencil drawing of a somewhat angry girl. Then one of my favorites is the painting with a bunch of paint tubes, but instead of colors they are each an emotion. Then I did a painting of a girl taking photos and also a painting of a girl with a tattoo. Another one that I made was the painting of a native American holding a pan flute. Then I have a few painting that I made after changing my theme a little. I started to work more with my personal emotions and painting things that portray just the emotion instead of the act of expressing. The first one I made of this was the non-objective painting and also the painting of the night ocean-scape with so many stars. I also made a painting last year which fits this theme, the abstract watercolor of the umbrella and rain. Then to show my optimism, I have a charcoal drawing of an apple under a spotlight.
To accomplish these artworks, I used a variety of mediums. The most commonly used one was acrylic paint. It is my favorite medium as it is very bright and can make cool textures and colors. So I used this to make bold color and really show the expression. Other mediums include charcoal, colored pencil and scratch board. I liked charcoal because it's smooth and yet can still hold a lot of detail. It also produced a more melancholy feel to really push the sadder emotions. So the picture of Cameron playing piano is a scratchboard. I did this because I liked that I could make the picture in black and white but still keep a lot of contrast and detail. The many small lines give a more intense, serious feel and make a more melancholy feeling. The next painting(s) is the tree one. I did this in acrylic to get the bright colors. The dancer and the violinist were both done in acrylic and then I did the block print. I really wanted to try a block print, and I thought since the image was quite simple, it would look nice as a block print. The next two people were done in colored pencil. Everything else was one in acrylic until the water color and the charcoal apple.
Each piece that I have is relevant to my theme whether it is my original theme or my changing theme. First--the scratchboard picture of my cousin playing piano. The scratchy texture of the drawing gives a more melancholy feel to it. So it is showing her expressing a more intense, sad emotion. Then the two tree paintings were done in the two colors. The two colors represent different emotions, and it shows how the actual colors of the paint make the emotion, not just the motif or brushstrokes.
So by using color, texture and technique I was able to show the artistic ways people can portray their emotions. It's often without words, and just with an image, a color or a tune. And these things put together make the expression so much more powerful than words can describe.
WOO :D
